This is not a test. Unless it is, and no one told me so I haven't revised, which means I'm going to fail. Thanks for that.

The Dark Side of Porn

Channel 4 are screening a series of documentaries collectively entitled The Dark Side of Porn that might be worth a gander.

If you're outside the UK but would like to see these let me know and I can post you a recording of them. The schedule is as follows:

Monday April 10th 23:05
Amateur Porn
The season opener, Amateur Porn, reveals what really happens on the first rung of the UK's sex industry career ladder, where the girl-next-door comes cheap but the stakes are high.

Tuesday April 11th 23:05
Me and My Slaves

Wednesday April 12th 23:05
Hunting Emmanuelle
Hunting Emmanuelle takes a look at the cultural impact of the 70s porn franchise.

I'd like to watch, and I'm not in the UK.

I must remember to watch that... I hope they tell the truth about the whole abusive industry.

I can tape it for you LC - I'll probably tape the whole three. You can email me with your address and I'll send a tape to you.

It'll be taped in euopean format though, can you play european format video tapes?

What did you think of it TP? I watched the Amateur porn one last night. I don't know why, exactly, but I didn't find it satisfying. To me it seemed more about "Oooh look at all the freaky, horrible and sad people who get involved in amateur porn" rather than a serious analysis of why they were doing it and what drives the market.

I also think a lot of people watching would just have had a good laugh at the men who couldn't perform and this made me uncomfortable. The programme was supposed to be about exploitation (on one level) and it ended up being exploitative in it's own right.

Also, they didn't speak to any of the paid actresses doing amateur work -Why were they there? What motivated them? I would have liked to have heard about their experiences and reasoning.

Damn, I missed it. Do you know if they're repeating it/showing it on E4?

I like programmes about the real side of the porn industry. Even the ones that try to be titalating, fascinating or 'revealing' in any way, just end up as televisual train wrecks. I know I can't turn away.

I thought it was trying to be titillating actually. There was loads of moaning on the soundtrack - oddly punctuated by Ellie, the incredibly aggressive female porn producer, barking orders at the participants. They also tried to show as much nudity as they could get away with, without the documentary actually turning into porn!

I was particulary uncomfortable about the use of a guy called Anthony who seemed to have depression and almost to be bordering on mental illness. I just doubt that he would have agreeed to be filmed like that if he'd been quite in his right mind. Basically he got made out to be impotent weirdo.

The male porn director was just an out and our psychopath - a very scary man indeed. Obviously there are plenty of people like him in the industry so there was truth there.

Perhaps I should just go write a post and stop hogging the comments.

I am a moron - I missed it too. Too busy cleaning out my guinea pig's hutch. Will check tv listings to see if it's repeated for thse who missed it like me!

Will be posting on this later, was in tears of anger for the last 15 minutes and I want to kill the rapist porn producer who came out with such misogynistic gems as 'Tell me when it hurts and I'll fuck you harder', wanted his ex to get a barcode tattoo on her neck saying 'property of jonathon' whatever his name was, and basically groomed a 14 year old girl into a porn making wife who he then violently attacked when she later wanted to get out of the relationship and stop making porn with him. But, yeah, porn's harmless.

Oh he was clearly dangerous (and a very bad liar too - did you see his eyelids flickering when they asked him questions?). Maybe he won't get anymore "girlfriends" after that documentary. I very much hope not anyway.

His name was James - as I remember.

That was my reaction when the voiceover said he was looking for the next one.
Extra-disgusting was the fact that his son is the one filming his encounters. Makes me wonder how he brought the boy up, how long he's been having sex in front of him and so on.
